Supermarkets and older Soviet-style stores are losing their positions to the price discounters and huge hypermarkets that more and more represent the big players in retail turnover. In 2006, total food and grocery sales at all sales points was estimated by Goskomstat to have been $145 billion in 2006, of which $80 billion was in formal grocery retailing.
